We know that becoming a functional specialist can be a significant change for many healthcare professionals.

It introduces a new way of working and a completely different type of care. While you’re no longer providing hands-on patient care, you’ll still ensure claimants are treated fairly, compassionately and with dignity.

This role can be challenging, especially during the first six months, so we’ve developed a comprehensive training programme to support you as you get up to speed. You'll be taught to use your existing skills in new ways as you become accredited in functional assessment to deliver the Health Assessment Advisory Service.

You’ll learn how to evaluate situations in a different way, and you’ll grow your knowledge of unfamiliar conditions. You’ll learn on the job from your colleagues and mentors and be supported on an ongoing basis as your career continues to develop.

Personal training programme

We’ve created a continual learning culture through our Clinical Learning and Development Academy, which provides a clear development path covering theoretical and practical core training and guidance, non-clinical internal training and continuous professional development (CPD).

When you start, one of our learning specialists will contact you to support your onboarding, discuss your training and schedule it in line with your personal training plan. Our preceptorship approach supports your transition from new starter to autonomous functional specialist, embedding the values and behaviours needed to deliver excellence. The training is delivered remotely, and you’ll join our virtual classroom with your camera on to allow you to fully participate.

You’ll start with a 12-week programme that will take you from new starter to approved functional specialist, which will run between 9am and 5pm. It takes approximately 17 weeks to reach full competency on the full-time course, part-time options will vary.

Your induction

Your new entrant programme is a layered journey of online learning, facilitated training and supervised practice to support you becoming a multiskilled functional specialist across three main areas: initial review, paper-based reports, and in person assessments.

Weeks 1 and 2 will cover general core training, terminology and contractual requirements alongside quality standards. This will be your introduction to HAAS and clinical training guidance. You will be introduced to topics that will inform your professional practice when conducting assessments such as mental health education, disability awareness, equality and cultural sensitivity, trauma-informed approaches, and other clinical topics as well as specific skills related to the benefit.

Week 3 will begin your initial review specific training where you will cover the required learning and core concepts for consideration when completing an initial review.

During weeks 5 and 6, you will cover the required learning to enable you to conduct paper-based reports. This will involve revisiting core concepts introduced in weeks 1 and 2 and build on this knowledge in a skill-specific approach. There will be several opportunities to practice this form of report writing and checkpoint assessments. This will include written and practical elements and will measure your knowledge and skills against your core learning objectives to ensure you’re meeting the required knowledge standards.

During weeks 7 and 8 you’ll return to supervised support utilising our live systems whilst continuing to build your own caseload with support. This will be a time when you continue to work on your initial review skills whilst also supported to apply your new paper-based report skills. At the end of week 8 there will be at least one review completed to determine that you’re able to work to the required level to enable you to progress to Stage 3.

During weeks 9 and 10, you will cover the required learning to enable you to conduct telephony and in person assessments. This will reinforce the core concepts introduced in weeks 1 and 2, as well as outlining the similarities between the paper-based and in-person assessment report types in order to continue building your knowledge and skills. There will be several opportunities to practice report writing and there will be checkpoint assessments. This will include assessment of your written and practical elements and will measure your knowledge and skills against your core learning objectives to ensure you’re meeting the required knowledge standards.

During weeks 11 and 12, you’ll return to supervised support accessing our live IT systems whilst  continuing to build your own caseload with support. You will continue to work on your initial review skills whilst also being supported to apply your new stills. At the end of these weeks there will be at least one review completed to determine that you’re able to work to the required level to enable you to progress to Stage 4.

You’ll work more autonomously whilst progressing towards gaining your approval in conducting assessment and writing paper based and in person reports over a graded speed to competency path. This will enable you to build confidence whilst gradually increasing workload to meet full capacity requirements.

Throughout this learning journey, your reports will be 100% audited by our quality auditing team. When you have demonstrated a certain quality standard, you’ll have around 15 hours of one-to-one audit coaching support which will include several of your end-to-end assessments being observed from preparation through to report completion. There will be some further self-directed study. When you meet the required quality benchmark and achieve approved status you will be a fully qualified Functional Specialist and attain approval status from the Secretary of State enabling you to become a Level 5 Functional Specialist. Your salary will increase and you will be eligible to earn up to 10% quality bonus.

    Induction training timeline

If you’re a part-time employee, you can choose between two part-time training options: a four-day schedule from Monday to Thursday, or a three-day schedule on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. It’s important to note that during the initial training period, which can last up to 6 months on a pro-rata basis, you’ll have the same day off each week to simplify scheduling with your training cohort.

Training will include a mix of self-directed learning and days with trainer facilitation and support, all within the core business hours of 9am to 5pm. On self-directed days, you’ll have more flexibility in your working arrangements, but trainers will not be available outside those core hours to answer queries.
